The Red Army Camel

Kuznechik and Vasily GrossmanKuznechik, a camel, followed the Red Army’s 308th Rifle Division from Stalingrad (1942/3) to Berlin (1945), according to A Writer at War, Vasily Grossman, by Antony Beevor.

The camel in this photograph may or may not be Kuznechik, who was not the only camel in the Soviet ranks. But the man reading the newspaper is definitely the celebrated Red Army correspondent Grossman.
